Engine number is in two places. The easy one - on the timing belt cover along with the engine type number The hard one - on the rear face of the cylinder head by No 1 cylinder by the exhaust manifold. You will need a mirror and light to read.

so the serial number on the sticker on the timing cover is the engine number. cool, i was thinking that but wasnt sure. what put me off the number on the cover is that its 830XXX which is a very high number so i was thinking maybe its not the engine number. reason for asking is i need to know before i can order a timing belt as there are 2 different belts according to engine number. one is from 131155 on. the other is up to 131154. so u can see why i thought my number of 830XXX might have been something else as its so much higher than the change over numbers for the belts.

That would seem reasonable. My engine number is 405xxx built early 1995 and as the 850's were one of the most popular models a number in the 800000 range could be possible in that time frame. The difference in the early engines was the width of the belt (early engines were narrower) and the number of teeth on the water pump drive. The early cam belts had a shorter life (50k I think) as opposed to 80k miles.

ok cool that makes sense as my 850 was built in 97 and registered in 98 so id say would be one of the latest 850's made. so volvo have made around 1 million 2.5 5 cylinder engines.. thats a lot lol
