V40 2.0 high fuel consumption. Is it normal?

MessageAuthor

Hello all, I have recently bought a 1998 V40 2.0 automatic petrol/gpl estate. Seems to be a nice moter so far but the only thing is, it seems to drink a hell of alot of fuel (both petrol and gpl). It does on average 25mpg. When whizzing around a city, obviously even less. It may reach upto 28mpg max when cruising at about 65/70mph. Does anyone know if this is normal? It's seems alot to me. My 2.5 diesel 1987 110 landrover does 22mpg! But thats understandable. This volvo is only 10 years old. It being Gpl makes fuel costs almost half price so i'm still getting a good deal but if there's something wrong the car thats causing it to over consume i would very much appreciate any suggestions.

thanks for that. I had a full service done before xmas. This including replacing the airfilter, lambda sensor, mapp sensor along with full oils change. One thing I've the feeling what may be the cause is the thermostate. Do you know anything about how the thermostate could effect the fuel consumption?

Thermostat? Meaning the one in the cooling system? If this was faulty you car would either run hot when should be upto temp or would never get warm at all! This would effect the mpg if engine running cold all the time as i think engines use more fuel when cold (probs due to needing richer mixture???). Any warning lights on? Tyres correct PSI? Engine do anything out of the ordinary? Gearbox selecting correct sort of gear? Justin
