Handbrake problems - help required!

MessageAuthor

Hi, just failed the MOT thanks to a dodgy handbrake. Last year I changed the rear disks, brake pads and brake shoes on the car at the local garage. They had problems getting the hand brake to work properly due to the fact that the brakes were unbalanced. They could get good bite on one side but not on the other. When they adjusted it it they had a real problem to get it balanced again. They got the symmetry right then when they tried the brake it threw itself out of line with end result poor bite on that brake shoe again. They just couldnt get it right, but it was enough to get it through a MOT test. Problem is the problem is bad and it wont get through a test. Any ideas? Anyone had a similar experience? Thanks.

Hi This link shows the correct procedure to adjust the handbrake Maybe they did not do it correctly? or maybe one of the adjusters in the rear has a problem?

It could well be that the handbrake shoe lining has come adrift, this happens regularly. It would be worth taking the disc off on that side to check. If this is the problem ensure you get genuine Volvo handbrake shoes as they seem to last much longer.

good thread, unfortunately I was there cos I had to take the car back after they apparently botched the first attempt. The guy was doing exactly what is described in the thread so I can only guess that there's something up with the wheel/internal mechanism. He showed me how he would align it by adjusting the wheel then he'd lock down everything and try the handbrake. Almost immediately the alignment of the Brake shoes changed and the bite was terrible. But what is in there that can go that wrong? It doesnt seem that complicated. Thanks.

as I recall the handbrake problem was there before the shoe change. One of the reasons I opted to change all in one. Going to pop down to see the local Volvo dealership cos this is driving me nuts..cheers.
