Fuse problem? - please help!!!

MessageAuthor

Hello By simply taking the radio out of my 98 classic v70 a fuse seems to have blown, but it's not immediately obvious which one. The heater blower / air con not working, radio not coming on (although anti theft red LED is flashing) and instrument panel illumination not working. Had a quick scan through the two fuse boxes under bonnet, nothing obvious. Could this be the instrument panel main fuse that the haynes manel mentions? Has anybody changed one of these? Thanks in advance, Chris

on mine the radio, dashboard illumination and heater blower all stem from fuse number 7 (20A). This fuse is ok though. Is there a main fuse that controls this too?

Looking through Haynes, everything you seem to be having problems with is in some way connected with an overload relay, item number 9 in all the Haynes diagrams. Other things that your car may or may not have - sunroof etc - are also linked to this relay. Haynes isn't helpful in telling where relay 9 actually is located..........but maybe with some puzzling you could track it down? Good luck Jack

Maybe worth having a look at relay 105 in the main fuse box in the engine compartment drivers side near the bonnet hinge.

Thanks for the help so far. I've had a look at the relays next to the fusebox, in particular 105 and 106 (as they are identical, and I presume 9 and 55 from the haynes manual). Nothing obvious, no blackening and they don't rattle... I swapped them over too as they are identical but the problem persists. Is there a simple multimeter test I can carry out to rule them out? thanks again

Ok, remove the fuse 11C/31 Climate control or 32 Radio, switch on the ignition. Relay 105 should be energised and there should be +12V to ground on one side of the fuses 31 & 32.

Looks like it might be the relay after all. I'll get hold of a new one - hopefully not too expensive and report back. Thanks again for your help, really appreciated! Chris

If you remove the 105 relay you should have +12V on the socket for relay terminal 1 at any position of the ignition key. If there are no volts check main fuse no 2 in the box behind the air filter. Relay terninal 2 should be live with the ignition turned on. If no volts check fuse 11c/10 (ignition switch)

Yep, I have 12v with the relay out so that points again to a problem with the relay itself.
