I know this doesn't really help but "not a lot" would be my answer. Sounds like a bit of a dog and the owner may come back to haunt you (quite literally) or ask you to pass him the soap in the shower !! Just because you send off for a new log book in your name doesn't mean you are the legal owner of the vehicle so if you go for it I would suggest getting something in writing from the garage owner stating something on the lines of the vehicle has been sold to recover costs of repairs/mot as present owner has not made contact and that no responsibility is on you. Best to cover your backside I would say. If the car is what your after then it will ultimately be worth putting some money into to bring it up to scratch. Plenty of bits on here and on Ebay to replace worn or damaged ones with. My car has had a full leather re-cover and looks absolutely superb. It has the R logo stitched into every seat and the glove box door. Just glad it was done prior to me purchasing it as I dread to think how much it cost. Good look and I hope this helps. Sharpey.
I was under the impression that when it came to abandonded cars, you can assume keepership, i.e. apply for a V5 but technically, if the rightful owner came back and asked for it back you legally had to give it to them?
Yes Jona76, the Act reuqires for notice to be given to the owner if traceable and for reasonable effort to be put in to tracing. Those are not in issue here. Even if you apply for a new v5, notice is still given to the owner (but he may have moved on trying to dodge car tax etc fines...). My question is how high should I go? And hey, if lawyering is easy, why don't you all do it ;) ?
